If you’ve been convicted of a drink driving offence in Queensland, you may be required to participate in the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program
This program is designed to help reduce repeat offences and promote safer roads, by ensuring that drivers are not under the influence of alcohol when behind the wheel.
An alcohol ignition interlock is a small device installed in your vehicle that requires you to take a breath test before starting the engine. If the device detects alcohol in your system, the car won’t start.
Participation in this program is mandatory if you have been convicted of:
- Driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10% or higher
- Failing to provide a breath or blood specimen when required
- Driving dangerously while under the influence of alcohol
- Any second drink driving offence within five years of a previous conviction
The interlock program runs for a minimum of 12 months, but it can be extended if the rules are not followed. You become eligible to begin the program either:
- The day after your licence disqualification period ends, or
- The day a court grants you a restricted (work) licence
It’s important to know that choosing not to participate in the program comes with significant consequences. If you opt out, you won’t be allowed to drive at all for five years from the end of your disqualification or from the date your work licence was granted.
While the idea of an interlock device may seem daunting, many find it a manageable step toward regaining independence and rebuilding trust on the road. It’s also a clear reminder of the importance of safe driving practices.
If you’re facing the interlock program, it’s a good idea to seek legal advice to understand your obligations and ensure you meet the requirements. With the right approach, this can be a positive turning point on your journey toward safer and more responsible driving.
